India Retains Top Spot in Global Mango Production; No Plans for Mango Development Board!

India Retains Top Spot in Global Mango Production No Plans for Mango Development Board

India continues to lead the world in mango cultivation, producing nearly 40–45% of global mango output, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. In the crop year 2024–25 (second advance estimates), the country produced 228.37 lakh tonnes, reaffirming mango’s vital role in Indian horticulture.

The update was shared by Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the Lok Sabha while responding to a starred question on whether a Mango Development Board or Minimum Support Price (MSP) for mangoes is under consideration.

No Mango Development Board in Pipeline

The minister clarified that the government has no plans to set up a dedicated Mango Development Board. Instead, support for mango production, processing, marketing, and export will continue through existing schemes.

At the core of this effort is the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), which assists farmers across all states and Union Territories in areas like planting material, area expansion, post-harvest management, processing, and marketing infrastructure. Additional support comes from programmes such as Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY), Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna, the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), as well as initiatives by the National Horticulture Board (NHB) and APEDA, particularly in developing packhouses and boosting exports.

Research-Driven Growth in Mango Sector

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) plays a key role in advancing mango cultivation. Leading institutes include the Central Institute of Subtropical Horticulture (Lucknow), the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (Bengaluru), and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (New Delhi). Currently, 23 All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) centres are focused on mango, working alongside State Agricultural Universities to develop new varieties, refine cultivation practices, and improve post-harvest technologies.

No MSP, Market Intervention Scheme Instead

The minister further noted that mango is not among the 22 crops covered under MSP, which is declared based on recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP).

However, to safeguard growers from distress sales, the government implements the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) under Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA). This scheme helps ensure fair prices when perishable crops like mango face sharp declines in demand or market rates.

Focus on Productivity, Value Addition, and Exports

With India contributing nearly half of the world’s mango production, the government remains committed to strengthening productivity, processing, and export potential through existing horticulture missions, rather than setting up a separate board or expanding MSP coverage.
