India and South Africa convened the fifth Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on Strengthen Agricultural Partnership on August 26, 2025, held virtually to advance bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector. The session focused on climate-resilient farming, digital solutions, research collaboration, farmer support, and market access.
The meeting was co-chaired by Ajeet Kumar Sahu, Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, and Thapsana Molepo, Acting Director, International Trade Promotion, South Africa.
Speaking at the event, Ajeet Kumar Sahu outlined India’s progress in agricultural modernization. He highlighted the adoption of digital technologies, promotion of climate-smart practices, introduction of risk mitigation measures, and government-backed credit schemes that are driving productivity and sustainability.
Thapsana Molepo reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to deepening ties with India, particularly in areas such as extension services, seed sector development, and capacity building. She emphasized that knowledge exchange between the two countries would play a vital role in strengthening agricultural resilience and food security.
The discussions also explored enhanced cooperation between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and South Africa’s Agricultural Research Council (ARC). Priority areas include joint research projects, technology transfer, skill development, and improved market opportunities for farmers and agribusinesses.
The meeting witnessed participation from senior officials representing India’s Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, ICAR, Department of Fisheries, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and the Ministry of External Affairs, alongside South African counterparts.
This engagement reflects the shared vision of both nations to leverage innovation, strengthen farmer support systems, and foster sustainable agricultural growth through closer bilateral cooperation.
