Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh – August 17, 2025
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan carried out a surprise visit to soybean fields in Chirakheda village, Raisen district, following complaints from farmers about extensive crop damage caused by a herbicide.
Fields Found Destroyed
During the inspection, Minister Chouhan observed that instead of healthy soybean crops, the fields were overrun with weeds, and the entire crop had been completely burnt. Farmers alleged that the destruction was caused by a chemical supplied by a private company.
“This is not limited to one farmer’s land. Many farmers have reported similar damage. A farmer’s crop is his life; if it is gone, his life is destroyed. Farmers will definitely get relief, and the responsibility will rest with the company,” said Chouhan while addressing farmers and officials at the site.
Scientific Investigation Announced
To investigate the matter, the Minister announced the formation of a high-level scientific committee by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The committee will be led by:
Dr. JS Mishra, Director, Directorate of Weed Research (DWR), Jabalpur
Dr. SRK Singh, Director, ATARI Zone 9
Senior officials from the Agriculture Departments of Raisen and Vidisha districts
The committee is scheduled to visit the affected fields on August 18, 2025.
Minister Chouhan also rejected an earlier report by scientists of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Raisen, calling it inaccurate. “This new team will conduct a thorough investigation, and strict action will be taken against the company if found guilty,” he added.
Nationwide Action Against Spurious Agrochemicals
Chouhan further assured farmers that the Centre would launch a nationwide crackdown on companies selling spurious pesticides, seeds, and fertilizers. These substandard products, he noted, often cheat farmers and put their livelihoods at risk.
