Farmers in Salem district have availed crop loans worth ₹244 crore from primary agricultural cooperative credit societies during the past five months, according to officials from the Co-operative Department.
Earlier this year, the department instructed cooperative banks under its control to prioritize disbursal of crop loans, particularly to new members of cooperative societies. For the current financial year, a target of ₹1,038 crore has been fixed for Salem district.
The district currently has 203 primary agricultural cooperative credit societies and five large multipurpose cooperative societies. Officials have directed these societies to hold review meetings once every two months to assess loan disbursal progress and ensure that all eligible farmers receive timely support.
Farmers can apply for loans by submitting documents such as ration cards, Aadhaar, land ownership records, and passport-size photographs at their nearest cooperative society.
Between April and August, 25,747 farmers in Salem secured crop loans worth ₹244 crore, including ₹3 crore sanctioned exclusively to new members of the cooperative societies, officials confirmed.
The department emphasized that extending financial assistance through cooperative institutions plays a crucial role in supporting farmers during cultivation and meeting seasonal agricultural expenses.
