Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has developed a geo-portal to assist farmers with vital agricultural decisions.
The portal provides real-time, accurate data on:
Rainfall and drought conditions
Weather patterns
Crop loss assessments
Speaking virtually at the National Space Day celebration in New Delhi, Mr. Chouhan praised Indian scientists for their satellite-based remote sensing achievements. He noted that the system now enables the government to assess crop damages with precision, ensuring timely compensation for farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).
The minister also revealed that Indian scientists are developing AI-driven technology capable of detecting crop pests by analyzing crop photographs.
Highlighting the broader role of space science, Mr. Chouhan said that such innovations help issue early warnings for disasters like storms, rising temperatures, or droughts, thereby strengthening crop protection and disaster management.
