Odisha is set to host the country’s fourth Central Agricultural University (CAU) in Sambalpur, as per the provisions of the Central Agricultural University Act, 1992.
The proposal was discussed on Monday during a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo.
If established, the new university will focus on producing globally competitive graduates and post graduates in agriculture and allied sciences.
It is expected to enhance productivity, promote sustainable farming practices, and build profitable agricultural systems, according to officials from the Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment Department.
“The proposed Central Agricultural University will be a game changer for Odisha. Its establishment will strengthen agricultural research, empower farmers, and drive innovation in sustainable farming,”
said Deputy CM Singh Deo.
The initiative is also expected to play a crucial role in ensuring food and nutritional security while transforming agriculture and allied sectors into more profitable ventures.
At present, India has three Central Agricultural Universities:
Central Agricultural University, Imphal
Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, Pusa (Bihar)
Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University, Jhansi (U.P.)
The upcoming institution in Sambalpur will be the fourth CAU recognized by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and is expected to significantly boost Odisha’s agricultural education and research landscape.
